Costa Rica Sailing Charters - Tour to San
Lucas Prison Island
Isla San Lucas was a penal colony until 1991 and it had the reputation
of being the roughest jail in Costa Rica. A network of underground
prison cells hosted society's undesirables who ran the community,
fished, farmed and did domestic chores. Today the 100 year old prison
cells can be toured.
We began the trip at Porto
Bello hotel, the group of 10 arrived, we did a role call, made sure
everyone was there, had their suntan lotion, beach attire, etc. 8 a.m.
we leave the mooring and head up the estuary. This is about an hour trip
to get out into the gulf. Along the way Pedro, the Captain points out
places of interest and explains the history of Puntarenas, one of the
oldest ports in Costa Rica. By now we are into the gulf.
The Island is about 9 miles
from Puntarenas, or about a 2 hour direct sail. We are serving
refreshments and snacks, the group are enjoying the ride and soaking up
the sun. We take our time and do a roundabout tour of the gulf, arriving
at our anchorage at San Lucas about 11 a.m. The guest are excited and
anxious to land!
We ferry the group to shore,
Louis our cook/guide, accompanies them. Off they go exploring and taking
fotos. It is a few minute walk to the prison buildings, then up a hill
to a breath taking view of the gulf and the deserted beach of San Lucas,
We are the only people on the island! Our own private beach!!
After swimming, exploring,
and taking fotos, the group arrives back to the dock about 2 p.m. We
pick them up and return to Anastasia for a quick rinse off/shower, and a
late lunch. After resting a while, it's up anchor and a long leisurely
sail around the gulf. We take our time, cruising up and down the beach
side of Puntarenas for about 3 hours before heading back to the estuary
for the 1 hour trip back to the mooring. We arrive about 6.30, all in
all, a great sail and a great day in Paradise!!
